When I went to the New England School of Photography in 2004, Kristen was one of the first students I met. I was automatically drawn to her upbeat energy and enthusiasm to start on this journey, unlike my nervous, “Am I really doing this?” energy. She became a dear friend and over the years I have continually been inspired by her ability to make difficult business decisions and focus on her unique angle toward her clients. I was looking at her website yesterday and her latest post ‘To Define a Flying Pig’ made me cry because she shared that no matter what happens in life, she receives gifts in all of her experiences – whether they come in the form of love or grief, or both. That gratitude permeates throughout her and in turn is helpful towards others. Her website is Faux-Toes Photography. In thinking about inspiration, I searched online some of the photographers that are on ‘America’s Next Top Model’ – not because it’s a profound show – but because I love the photo shoots on the show. One photographer I came across was Cade Martin. He has a profile of photos called ‘Stories’ on his website that are absolutely gorgeous! It reminds me of why I love photography so much. Being able to tell a story through a photograph is an important message I strive for. And in the same note, telling a story on stage was what made me become a theater major in college, which is why I have a soft spot for photographing performing arts.

Leaping

After a full month in January of “In Geometric Terms” at the Harvard Neighbors Gallery, I am back to updating my blog. I’ve added a photo showing part of the gallery space used. This project was a year in the making and I truly am pleased with the results. Along with ‘Resonate’ and Watertown Open Studios, Harvard Neighbors was the third time I showed this body of work.

Next is the Harvard Dance performance of Re: Re: Re: a dance installation. Performed by Harvard dance students, this moving piece opened in December and was brought back in February for audiences to enjoy again. Jill Johnson, dance director at Harvard University, choreographed this modern piece so beautifully that I only hope my photos do the show justice. Kid time

Since I haven’t updated my blog in awhile, I decided to post a few kid pics. There really is no better place to photograph in the fall then in New England. This weekend I’ll be photographing another event for The Fireplace and it will take place at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum. Photos to come soon!

Boston Globe: Porgy & Bess Gala

On Saturday, September 10th, I photographed the American Repertory Theater’s Porgy & Bess Gala which was hosted at one of their donor’s incredible houses in Cambridge, MA. There was an afternoon party before the show and then an evening reception. There were buses that shuttled everyone to and from the Loeb Drama Center. I was fortunate enough to sit on the bus next to a donor who has seen versions of Porgy & Bess in Europe and has extensive knowledge of opera in general. The photo below was in The Boston Globe yesterday, which includes the president of Harvard University, Drew Faust, and both main actor’s Norm Lewis and Audra McDonald. Watertown Open Studios

One of the best pieces of advice I received from The New England School of Photography was to challenge myself by photographing what I wanted. Working as a photographer is such a gift and to keep that gift, photographing something unwork related keeps my eye sharp and my work fresh. I’m very excited to be a part of Watertown Open Studios on October 1st and 2nd 2011! Along with many other artists, I will be showing my series “In Geometric Terms.” This is a personal project I have worked on for the past year. The Watertown Open Studios is the second showing of this series. They are self portraits which show how we can look at our bodies geometrically instead of judgementally.

Portrait: Zoey Grey

My amazing college friend Albry and her wonderful husband Dex recenlty adopted a beautiful baby girl named Zoey Grey. I was oh so happy to have the chance to meet her a few weeks ago and photograph her cute self! It’s such a blessing that two people who have gone through so much to have a family now have this precious bundle. Being an auntie (along with my five other girlfriends, plus Albry’s sister) means giving as much love to Zoey as possible. Which is a lot.
